Kallidaikurichi

- Small town totally out of the crowd, pollution, excessive cars and more importantly IT companies :-)

- Place where everyone in the street knows each other very well personallly to an extent, where they can walk in to the house anytime to speak with you.

- Narrow gap between houses on both sides is being “Vasal telichu and kolam pottu” in a uniform way.

- People sitting and chatting in the Veetu THINNAI.

- Small temple, amidst a small lake on side and “Vayal” on the other side

- BREEZE of the trees in the middle of vayakadu which you feel would even blow you off

- Milk in the house comes from the Cowin the kollapuram

- A door in the house which actually connects you to the house that is next to you. (In olden days, these doors would connect from the first house all through the last house)

- A function in your house, is being celebrated happily, joyfully as if it is their house function by your neighbours

- Mangais for the manga urugai comes from own mango grove

- Putting a thalani in the hall and lyling down, the breeze making you sleep even in the summer noon

- When you are given a cup of Tea / Coffee, you are expected to “Thooki kudi” (drink with the tumbler not touching your lips)

- When you enter a house as a guest, everyone in the house come to welcome you in.

- When the guest are there, spend time talking with them rather than seeing TV

Is it not going through this list amazing…….

When I type this post, I am able to experience them again!!!!

Me and Madhu experienced all of this within a day in Kallidaikurichi (my native place) near Tirunelveli.

Hai Sambamurthy, I still remember those days we studied together at Tilak Vidyalaya High School, though you were one or two years junior to me. I think you have two brothers (Vijayan and Murthy) and two sisters. Where are Vijyan and Murthy staying? Convey my regards to them. I am residing in Chennai at Vadapalani. I was working abroad for about 18 years and am now leading a retired life. I have two children; one son and daughter. Both are well settled in the U.S. Even myself and my wife are planning a trip to Kallidai by the end of this month (July 2010) to attend the Sastha Preethi to be conducted on 31st July at Mudaliappapuram Street. I was always looking for friends whenever I visited KIC. Our house is still there and Kumar has been staying there. This is my telphone number in Chennai 04423651046. When you get time please call me.
        Best regards,

This kind of villages are fading away, nowadays.
Our in-laws belong to Vedaranyam District. Our family deity is Thillaivilagam Sri Kothandaramar. It is a unique place where Lord Rama and Natarajar bless us in one compound.
A visit to this small village, Thillaivilagam revealed how peaceful life is. The temple is surrounded by a reasonably big pond (kovil kulam) where lot of lily/lotus blossom. The tiled houses in agraharam have olden type with long thinnai, mappilai thindu etc. Inside Rezhi, camera ullu, perumal ullu, rooms for storage, camera ullu etc…. The kollaipuram had long passage where people grow all kinds of herbal, floral trees/plants for their day to day requirement, starting from tomato, pachai milagai, elumichai, manga, narthanga, veppa maram, maruthani, kadarangai, kathiri, vendai etc. Every house in agraharam had cows, nice vasal thelithu, kolam pottu events in early mornings. Basically village is agraraian in nature.
Of course, urbanisation has impact in cable tv, TV serials screaming in hot afternoons, very few people prepared to do agri.
I wonder and pray we should get back to agriculture, as future days are going to be horrible, in rising prices, demand for good rice produce. Once our mission comes to a level in materialistic world, we should go back to our roots and spend time peacefully with our natives, with a social commitment by way of agri, teaching village poor students, preserving environment etc. May God bless us.

I hail from Ekambarapuram Street, Kallidaikurichi but now in Chennai. Due to my and wife’s job / kids education, I am not even in a position to go there every year. Last stay there was 3 years back. I finished my graduation in 1990 and was regular visitor there. But in the last few years, not able to visit. We enjoyed our games in land / Kannadiyan Canal / cricket. My wife is from Ramachandrapuram Street.

      Hello

You can choose either Hotel Bhaskar at Kallidai (where many TV and Cine artistes stayed for their shoots – Movies Saami, Seval, etc., and TV Serial Annamalai to quote a few) or at the Sadavudayar Guest House in Srivarahapuram Street. If you want more comforts, you can also stay in Tirunelveli about 30 kms from Kallidai, where there are good hotels like Aryas, Barani, Sakunthala Intl.

I am pass out of Tilak Vidyalaya in the year 1968 and secured 76% in aggregate and 95% in maths. I belong to Viswanatha Puram Street and had my initial schooling in Ekambarapuram Elementary School. Whenever I go to Kallidai, I visit the school with my children to show them the class rooms where I studied, the canal and the roof top from where I dived. It is a lovely place. But a point of sorrow is that the water of Tamiraparani is becoming unfit for bathing, as the pollution is rearing its head.

    hai every body

feel very proud hailing from kallidaikurichi. Such a execellent place where i with my friends in school days enjoyed a lot at athangarai, pothai cricket ground and other places.

My friends are, Moorthy (Seetharam appalam), AKS, Somu (auto), A sankar, white kumar, soon, athi, balaji(vijaya bank), hari, B.Sriram, left sekar, nool(sundar), S.Sriram, and so many, i cant sto counting..

i finished my schooling and college in kallidai and ambai.

Got married in May 1998. My wife’s name is Akila (proud hailing from kallidai too) and blessed with two kids.

Still my father (Dakshinamoorthy sir, retired AHM from tilak vidyalaya school) still stays there. My father in law, Dr. K.Sankaran, retd medical officer too stays in kallidai.

So, i will be visiting kallidai atleast once in a year or so..

last, but not the least, i am the grand son of, Brahmashri Guruswami Sastrigal, great scholar, who has studied and worked in Sanskrit college at Kallidai. He was the Asthana vidwan of Sri Sringeri Saratha Mutt for so many years.. He passed away on 12.02.08 leaving all of us… He is a LEGEND….

      Hi Kannan,

Glad to see you here. You never told me about this blog. For other users, let me say that I am your co-brother now in Trivandrum. I simply love Kallidai and that\’s why visit the place atleast once a month. Of course, our parents-in-law live there. The Sastha preethi bhojanam is a memorable one. I have visited almost all the temples and streets in Kallidai. I love shopping at the Anakkal area. Wish wishes.

      October 5, 2009 at 2:54 pm | #47

      Hi Kannan,

Happy to know of your family back ground.
Iam venkateswaran residing in guwahati, assam. (Rajamani nickname)
Your father shri Dakshinamurthy Sir taught us Geography when i was studying class X and XII during 1973, 74 . I remember your grand pa giving pravachanam on Srimad Ramayana in Shri Lakshmiswamy Koil. It was announced that his daughter-in-law was on family way at that time.

Your father is an interesting teacher politely explaining things. He used to refer some textile mill, if i remember correctly.

Once the present sannidhanam of Sringeri visited KIC, your grandpa was reading out a ‘swagata partrika’. The Acharya was closing eyes and minutely hearing him. He compassionately interrupted once and corrected a word. Sastrigal with all humility accepted the same. It was a nice scene to see.

My father used to refer ‘Aayiram kaal Mandapam’ of the Tamirabarani teertha. He accompanied his father in younger days, when the earlier Sringeri Acharya ( i think Shri Nrisimha Bharati Swamigal)gave lecture on a single shloka on the entire day.

The speciality of our KIC is having 18 agraharas. 18 has many more inner meanings. I think agraharam means, the ‘forefront garland’. This should be the ornament of the entire KIC. we Brahmins have great duty for the welfare of the entire mankind.

Hearing the ‘Advida philosophy’ from great preachers, im drawn towards that and
learnt few ‘suktams’, etc. from Aangarai Shri Krishnamurthy Ghanapatigal in Guwhati. With the Almighty’s grace, i am happily married and we have a son.

To the possible extend we should follow our dharma and guide the next generation. i had very good room mates having vedantic knowledge here during my bachelorship. ‘Vedo vedavi rakshithaha’ is a rrue sentence.

My wife teaches Adi Shankarcharya’s shlokas to children and conducts gita competition among children through Chinmaya Mission. She is an I.T.O. I am employed in a cement distribution co.

I am practising Sahaja Yoga & surrendered to Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi .

My parents are Koma mami & VR mama of mudaliappa puram st. who r staying with my brother in calcutta. my mother (75 yrs) is the daughter of Kolathu Sir, vadakku mada theru.

OK brother, Lokha samastha sukhino Bhavantu .

It really felt good to read about the place I grew up. I try to visit Kallidai at least once a year…but it always ends up to be once in 2 years :( .

I read this post…and skimmed through your blog entirely…Nothing offensive….just think about this….If you can make time for trips to different places in India as a tourist….you can definitely make time for a short trip to Kallidai. That will help your kids to know what a village is and appreciate it better…Just pass the goodies through generations….Again..am saying this not to hurt you…just a thought…

    Dear all Kallidai folks,
Though I am from VKPuram (lived in Madura Coats Colony all my school/college days), Kallidai has a special place in my heart for three reasons.
    1) The rivulets and the green paddy fields that stretches yonder
    2) Perumal Kovil
    3) (last but not the least) my good friend and class mate Chuppa (Subramaniam from Ganapathi Lingam Applam). Have lost touch with him and last I heard he is in the US as a Doctor. Chuppa, ping if you see this mate!

I studied at St Mary’s @ VKPuram and Paramakalyani college @ Alwarkurichic and passed out in 1986. I will be visiting Tirunelveli next week (week starting 24th Aug).

It is so wonderful to see all your posts and I get nostalgic too. Had been to Kallidai on many occasions to hear kata-kalakshepams and play cricket matches!

One request to all you Kallidai folks! If there is a house that is available for sale, I would like to buy it out, God Willing. Can someone get in touch with me please? I am at Chennai now. My contact details are

After leaving KIC, and visiting so many places, we know the importance of our home town.

As you all experienced different facets of life and in my own way, I feel KIC is superior to many other places of Tamilnadu in respect of cultural heritage.

I am missing you all and fortunate to search the net just like that to discover a treasure like this today.

    Shall keep interacting in future.

    Dear all friends,

We may live for few decades and go back to the Almighty who created us.
But , the speciality of our Kallidaikurichi (Once Shri Abhinava vidya teertha Swamigal of sringeri named it as ‘Kalyana kurichi’ – as many marriages were taking place during His visit) is that it has many majestic temples which stand for centuries.

Maanendi appar temple is so beautiful with huge boundry walls. The murtis there r so beautiful. Specially the navagrahas are carved out with all perfection. Sapta maatas, and other Gods r also appealing. The God’s name is Kanva-lingam. The Devi is very much stylish. Vadivambal Devi. She only gives us strength during our difficult times.

Shri Subramanya swami temple is another majestic temple. Though the kodimaram is for Lord Ganesh (such a big temple for Shri Ganesh), he has given the importance to his brother, Shri Kartikeya.

The speciality in that temple is the beauiful murti of “Shri Dakshinamurti on the prahaaram, seated on the gopuram.

Shri Lakshmi Swami is a kan kanda deivam. He smiles so majestically. On those days he was adorned with lots and lots of ornaments of old fashion ( not these days glitterings !). Specially aarattu in Poopallakku used to bring tears in our eyes.

Vaalavanda Devi is another Shakti. My mother used to melt upon seeing her beauty during Navaratri. The utsava murti used to sit in an oonjal taking different avataras on different days.

Kandappa koil is having the speciality of having all the three brothers, Shri Ganesh, Shri Muruga and Shri Aiyappa.

My father used to tell about ‘pagali koothar temple’ in agastiyar koil theru. i never viisted it , unfortunately. similarly kottai theru temple . there is a saying that near the nataraja murti of Maanendiappar temple there is a secret underground route to kottai theru temple. Can anybody through light on this ?’

I seldom visit Kallidaikurichi but fondly remember its orthodox tradition.

We respectfully remember Shri NVS Sir, who was the Head master of Tilak Vidyalaya. In spite of his tight schedule, he used to teach us Shri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram in Bhajanai Mutt in Mudaliappa puram St.

Can we expect teachers, scholors, orthodox grandmothers , like them now ???

I am Embar R. Kasturi. I hail from the Embar family famous for Harikatha tradition. I am a carnatic Vocalist and Sangeetha Upanyasam (Musical Discourses) Exposnent. I also teach online carnatic vocal classes to many students abroad.

I was invited for performing a musical discourse on Shri Thyagaraja Swami at Kallidaikurichi Sankara Matam and the performance took place on 4-12-2009. I was astounded the way people responded to the discourse. Very learned and excellent audience. They have planned to invite me for the ensuing Sri Thyagara Utasavam to be celebrated during Jan 2010.

    Hello all,

It is certainly a very nostalgic and humbling experience to hear such wonderful words about our great Kallidaikurichi. What a wonderful place. Every day at Kallidai was a truly wonderful blessing and I was fortunate to be there for the frist 22 years fo my life. Am from Thothi Vilagam street, son of the great GLAD Krishna Iyer.

Some of the mostly truly outstanding and memorable experience were the baths at our evergreen and perennial Tamarabharani (not to forget the Kannadiyan Kalvai which runs behind our street’s Vinayagar temple) and the copious amount of cricket we used to play at Pothia.

We were also hugely fortunate not to have satellite television on those good old days which forced us to be more often in the street enjoying Cricket which I still follow rigorously.

Hope a few of guys might remember me.

Hi, Kallidai folks, A sad news. Dr K Sankaran S/o Dr (Late) S.Krishna Sarma, of Srivarahapuram, my F-in-Law, a great soul, departed for the Heavenly Abode on Sunday, the Jan 10, 2010. He was ailing for some time (exactly 25 days with interstitial intestinal obstruction – surgically removed on Jan 2, 2010). He was admitted in Sri Sudharson Hospitals, Vannarpettai, Tirunelveli on Dec 14, 2009 and was under observation. Although, he showed good signs of improvement, the end came suddenly. Cremation and other rites took place at Kallidai.
Dr Krishna Sarma, father of Dr K Sankaran was the pioneer in compiling a family tree way back in 1920 (the tree is known as Rajavallipuram Family tree – migrated to Kallidai in 1760 AD). The chart was later updated by Shri K.S.Kulathu Iyer in 1992. Thereafter, there has not been any updation. Those who happen to be in the address list and in possession of the booklet (family tree/chart) may like to furnish the latest information. Vasudeiva Kudumbakam. Let us unite again.

    June 25, 2010 at 6:04 pm | #105

Hi one time residents of Heaven! This is humble Ayya Mani My Father hails from Kallidai(vadakku Patta nainar street – I am not sure if this is continuation of Vaithiappa puram or Ramchandrapuram st where KS Raman & Pappa Raan[my aththangar] have their ancestral house) his father was late Viswanatha Aiyer, both of whom migrated to Bombay in 1950′s. Though I was born in Sampurvadakarai( native place of my amma Maduram, daughter of Ayya Sastrigal), I used to visit Kallidai every year till I joined medical School in Bombay. I used to stay mostly in my Attai’s place on 17, mudaliappa puram street( Narayani, w/o KCSahsranamam Iyer lovingly called Saaththu mama). My brother KV lived and grew up in kallidai. We used to have a whale of a time everytime I visited Kallidai, what with walking to AAththangarai for bath every morning, or visiting the fields on the way to the river , having bath in the private thottam of the Vaikkaal[kannadian kaalvai], listening to old tamil songs on the asariri! the loud speakers, into late evening, attending the temple for pradakshinam after the bath in the river, going in the evening for sndhya vandanam, prasadams every evenings etc, I cannot forget it, Then af course the gala weddings that used to take plae in attai’s place, the GNB concerts, the MLV concerts etc that used to be part of the marriage celebrations etc, Ican’t believe that I was part if it! Well we hav e now moved on, I am living on the Isle of Man, in the middl of Irish sea. I still have some temptations to move back to kallidai, but if this will be in this birth or next, i do not know. ifelt sad when the riverside mandapams with the samaadhis of the various siddhas in the town got converted de facto to public conveniences. I still remember fotographs of Sringeri Acharyals(senior and the currrent) staying in my attai’s place during their vijaya Yatras. Apologies if i have taken too much of your reading time

Thanks to all of you for rekindling the lovely memories. God bless you all.

    R venkateswaran :

I do not know you personally, so also you are to me. From the figure in my E mail ID you can guess my year (1951) of birth Our thinking unites when you took me back to my school days. Reverent, Venerable, Respectable, Amiable NVS Sir was my class teacher in class XI in 1967-68. I pay my sincere thanks about reminding me about the specification and qualities a teacher should have. If another NVS Sir is born it will be boon to the Society. Thinking you must be younger to me, my blessings are showered on you for reminding about a great personality.

I was personal secretary to Cmde G N Sreekumar, who is now settled in Chennai. I will be retiring on 31 July 2011. Hi! i am krishnamoorthy from mumbai. I chanced to surf this page today and felt like putting my thoughts.Though it is not my birthplace i have visited kallidaikurichi several times in the past, the last being in February 2005 when i visited the sadavudayar temple during a ‘thai vellikkizhamai’. Sadavudayar happens to be my mother’s kuladeivam but she being a female cannot visit the temple. Hence whenever i visited Kallidai I used to stay in my uncle’s place in Ekambarapuram street (Sri S.Raghavan, still living there.)who used to accompany me to the temple. On behalf of my mother I used to perform pooja and abhishekams to sadavudayar with the help of Kumar vadhyar of thonthivilagam st. During my visit in 2005 I participated in the pooja proceedings and happened to take with me the set of 4 CDs related to the proceedings of the Kumbhabhishekam performed in June 2004 and showed the proceedings to my mother. My mother, however, passed away in October 2007. Also my younger brother’s in laws who are no more hail from Kallidaikurichi ( Sri Desini and his wife Smt Lakshmi, one of the daughters of the founder of Chandra Vilas at Tirunelveli Junction. I have always enjoyed my visits to Kallidai. I hope I will be able to visit once again.

It was refreshing to go through the long comments from various people about Kallidai and the way of life, beauty, temples, etc. My grandfather had a house long back at Ramachandrapuram but it had been disposed of. I have been visiting Kallidai for performing puja at Sadavudayar temple (at irregular intervals). As one of our gentlemen expressed, I am also desirous of settling down in the village maybe after about a couple of years. If a few like minded people could come together to build a suitable apartment, I would request that my name could also be included. I could be contacted at the email-id ‘sramakrishnan1957@gmail.com’. Let the exchange of pleasantries grow as also the acquaintances. Regards to all.

My name is Ramani (my parents VR Mama and my mother Koma mami) stayed at 112, Mudaliappapuram Street (near Pillayaar Kovil/Vaikal). It was wonderful see so many comments about KIC. WOW what a wonderful place it was. I carefully gone thru every line and i felt I am in KIC and remembered all my child hood days. I really miss this heavenly place and miss all my old friends. I visit once in 2/3 years to KIC and visit our Kuladaivam koil Nettur Dharma Saastha. I studied at Tilak Vidyalaya. My best friends at Mudaliappapuram Raju, Hari, Ramesh, Ambi, Ooty Shankar, Kumar, Babu, Dilip and many more. We all played Cricket, Kabbadi, Pambaram, Kittipal etc.. Played lots of cricket match with Egambaram team at Pothhai Ground. Had lots of fun at Vaikal and Thamirabharani. What a wonderful feeling when i think about all that. Truly it was a heaven. I stayed at KIC till 1982 and proceeded to Kolkata. I am employed with Hindustan Unilever at Kolkata. Would be happy to find friends from Mudaliappapuram.

      Hi Ramani,
The Yagyaraman who wrote about KIC is ur relative. He is mookandi mama’s (Rammiah and Chellamma mami in the same street, ur amma’s mama and they are known as anna manni to all )son. Mookandi mama’s official name is R.Mahadevan and he is the GM in Indian Bank and he is now in Kolkatta. Hope this will help u to bring up the family tree.
I am Mythili, mookandi mama’s marumal. My amma’s name is Rukmani but she is known as mama yecham. My sister Lakshmi (echumi kutti) used to live and study in KIC. Me with my other sisters Gowri and Banu used to visit KIC for vacation. Even though u people never included us in ur teams I like KIC. My husband studied there for a couple of years and we met in KIC only.
Mookandi mama got 3 kids, 1 daughter who is an Auditor and lives in B’lore and got married to somebody related to Harihara Vadhyar. Ganesh @ Yagyaraman is an IT guy whose blog made me write this. the last one is also an Auditor but works in the IT/ Management field and is in Mumbai. He used to visit ur sister Lalitha (my patti used to call her Nalitha). My mom too visited ur sister there. Now I am in US. Lakshmi is in Chennai and got a girl who is doing her final BE. Gowri is in Kovai and got a son and the last one Banu is in Tirunelveli and got a son. Mama is still in touch with KIC. My sister used to study with Chara (Chidambara mam’s daughter), Chandra (Bajji Sambu mama), Sankari (NVS Sir Daughter).
Of course I haven’t seen u a lot or visited u all a lot, this time when my mom visited US was telling something about her family and all the members. If I am right u havve a brother by name Sankar and another sister (name not known).

Seethai Aathai’s whole family is there and of couse Kasippa, Maadhuppa all there. I know all these names from amma.
Good Luck to you. Venerationsto ur parents. Luv to urfamily.

Hai venkacham. I hope you can remember Cycle kadai Jayaraman from Mudalipuram and Ayyapaswami (village munisif) in our days of mudaliappapuram and I can remember some memories if u give little more touch. One Vengacham studied with me in Tilak Vidyala from No.1 Mudaliappapuram and BUFAT SANKARAN (son of BUFAT NArayanan) are very famous in my early days life in Kallidai in 1970s.

I take the liberty of adding some inputs. It is Buffet Sankaran (drawn from Buffet Lunch). I owe my gratitude to Cycle Kadai Jayaraman as he donated me a Vadaseri Dhoti (In those days Vadaseri Dhoti was famous) in my struggling days to make both ends meet. If I am correct this philonthropist is married to Sattu Iyer’s daughter. From this pages, I rekindle my nostalgic feelings of bygone days of life and struggle in Kallidaikurichi. – R Sambamurthy -

    Hello All,
Nice and glad to see all the blogs which speaks what a great pleasure and experience our native place has given us. I just cannot forget those days I lived there though it was only few years. I did study in Tilak Vidhyalaya where Mr. Dakshina Moorthy, Mr. Ramalingam, Mr. Shunmuga Pondy who were the primary teachers at that time and cannot forget the great assistance and support they gave us. Without their support and appreciation, there is no way I could have become better and better. Thanks and many thanks to whereever they are.

Anyone who thinks they can recognise me, reply to me. Let me test my memory too.

Love you all wonderful bloggers who love their native place like their eyes.

Hello Sambamurthy: I am Sundaram, younger brother of Mr C.K. Gaureeshankar. I am also the elder brother of C. Ravichandran Iyer who has shared his fond memories about Kallidai on February 20th last year. Hello Ravi!!

The exchanges and reminiscences of Kallidaikurichi by one and all in this column indicate the indelible memories that each one is carrying in their minds. It shows that neither time nor despair had extinguished such memories although everyone of us have since long left Kallidai to far off places in India and abroad.

I read with a great interest everyones’ expressions.

It is long time since we last met. After leaving Kolkata in 2001 I continue still with Hindustan Petroleum heading its Legal Department,North Zone, Delhi. In between had a stint also at Chennai in 2007 for a year and returned to Delhi.

My mobile number at Delhi is 9868217851.

I also subscribe to the views expressed by Mr S. Ramakrishnan in his comments dt.25th Sept.2010 that old residents of Kallidai like us who are now desirous of a home-coming to Kallidai should scout for either agraharam houses or building new apartment complexes.

How is Vijayan? I met Lakshminarayanan, S/o. Late Chadambarakrishna Iyer, at Chennai last year. They were my neighbors when we lived at 32, Vaidyappapuram St. My mother passed away in 2006.

I go for Darshan of our family deity Swamy Shri Chadayudayar. Last I visited Kallidai was in Dec., 2009. I enjoyed the stay at Chadayudayar Chattiram at Veerappapuram St.,

I heard that Kumbabhishekam of Kartikeya swamy temple, Kandappapuram was performed last year.

Hello, Sundaram. The More you write about Kallidaikurichi and its unique feature of 18 Agraharams rekindles the nostalgic feelings. I have taken my sons to Kallidaikurichi in 2004-2005 and took them around Tilak Vidyalaya. I have shown them the class rooms and the serene atmosphere of the School. Vijayan is doing fine.

The households in different streets veigh with one another to perform sasthapreethi and other celebrations. A bath in the thambrabarabi is worth all the trouble reaching kallidai. There are number of families these days who can deliver iyer sappadu at home.

Waiting at the bus stand near panchayat office is a good pass time. Listeneing to children reciting their home work in the evening is a unique experience. The vaikal running at the backyard is a good water body though it is getting dumped with sewege and the water is polluted.

    Hello People!

Very good to see eveyone sharing their experience of our Kallidai. Well not sure if anyone can figure me out.

I am called “Sabarish” and peran of Shankar Iyer in Kutthikal Street no 61 house9 The first house) on the road end. I was with my grandfather, grandma, my mom and brother (Raja). Known to be mischeavous ;) . Studied there until 5th standar in Bala Vidyalaya, Mahatma Gandhi School in Veerapural and then Tilak Vidyala couple of months. Then headed to Bombay.

After that I have never been to Kallidai. Well according to me, heaven means its Kallidai for its heritage, culture, people and environment and peaceful and happiness.

I know many people in Kallidai, Appalam Business Mama opp to my house, Raaman mama (Late), and my childhood friends were, to name some, Murali (Who had a younger sister named Bhuvna, and parents were doing awesome murrukku, thatti, Polis ect), Rajesh, Vishwanath(From near the mutt), Singapore Kicha was like uncle to me, Kutraalam Sekhar (Appala business). I cant forget.

Some of my teachers I remember are (Bamaa miss and Coma Miss, both were sisters), and some other in our Kutthikal street (If I remember, Lakshmi).

God should bless me to come to Kallidai and live again. Lovely place, people, temples :)

Hope to see you all sometime :) If anyone can recognize me, will be pleased to hear :)

    Cheers

I am working as a Senior Software Engineer in Dell now in Bangalore.

    Dear Commodore P Jayapal
Thanks for bringing back the memories. I faintly remember One Shri Dhanraj Pal was studying with me in 1968 batch. He used to reside near the church on the way to Vairavi Kulam. I am not sure whether he is related to you. The names of the teachers you mentioned are the “Gems” of the Society. Even today, I tried to follow the message and foot-prints they left in the Society, which will remain indelible for ever. I have had close interaction with Naval Officers. In fact I was Personal Secretary to Commodore Sree Kumar, Director (Shipbuilding) Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited. I am left with 28 days servie to superannuate on 31 Jul 2011 on completion of 60 years

Then the tirunelveli halwa………Frankly speaking I have never tasted a better stuff than this……. I wish every year I go there and enjoy the serene beauty of the vayals, attangari, Tundi vinayagar Temple, Lakshmi Varaha Swamy Temple etc. Thanks we shall meet again……….. Dear All, this the same Ambi of thonthivillagam agraharam. I forgot to mention that i was a student of Laxmipathy Nadunilai palli popularly called as “Ayyiah Kottai” school. After that my father late Chellam Iyer put us in school at Kolkata where we are based now. I still remember all the persons of our area like bungla mani’s son chuppamani, raman ganesan of Appala kadai etc. Those date would never comeback again when we used to watch film in open theater sitting on the floor, borrowing cycle from Ramasamy MRS Cycle mart etc. having lots of kadalai mittai, murukku and vadams made by mamis of kallidaikuruchi……. We meet again sir. Lakshmi Varaha harihara putran.

    Hai friends

Nice to see all your comments about kallidaikurichi. I am cheeni(48 kuthukkal street) next to meenakshi teacher’s house. No one will forget kallidai even if he visit for an hour in kallidai. All of us are writing only positive side of kallidai, where are those 18 Agraharam gone? Where are discourses (like villibaratham by Pulavar keeran), Mahabharatham (by Thuppul Narasimhan- at ramachandra puram st) Saraswathi Ramanathan (kambaramayanam), srinivasa kalyanam(thothi vilagam street) – krishna bremi) gone. If we get back these type of discourses again in kallidai, then we can think of those olden days in kallidai.

I am currently in dubai, make sure that i visit every year to kallidai at least for week’s time. I suggest any one who is having a good back ground in IT or any one else(ref.Brahmin Association) who can voluntarily collect the name and address(incl.email & tel no) and make a group. This may be helpful suppose if any one good position n an organisation can give a opportunity for unemployed youths in KIC(wherever possible)

I was studied in TVHSS from 5th std(1976-84) Ambai Arts college(1984-87), my class mates are Ramanathan(Headmaster Easwaran’s son).

We play cricket crazily in pothai, Saradha ground, Keerai pathy, ramachandra puram, kuthukal theru, Vayakaddu(after harvest season) etc, if it rains then card game

My close friend Kumar(white) is in singapore still in touch with me and of course my class mate & another close friend(Ramms) Ramasamy still in touch with me

Last but not the least if you name it a function, that’s definitely celebrated in kallidai

I happened to spend a Sunday afternoon scanning this site.Nostalgic, though I could not network anyone therein. Our family though had roots at Kallidaikurichi, sailed the seven seas in the early 19 th century(perhaps, then, I was told it was a cardinal sinto crossthe seas)and were happily settled overseas till the Second World war uprooted us and we took refuge as evacuvees(Short form for evacuation) at kallidaikurichi. This was the year of the lord 1950′s. As inetrim measure I studied for couple of years at Tilak Vidyalaya( erstwhile King George School)and we had a Mr.K.N.SUNDARAM as the Principal. He, as I remember was a great Shakeasperean follower and he along with some like minded people used to stage Annual Dramaticsand other event in the then Newly built Stage of the school.Of course the audience had to put up with squating on the sanded area.(Not complaining).Regret,I am not able to recollect many of the allumini, partly due to my short( but sweet) stopover therin.Baseball was very popular at school those daysand many a times the ball used to land at nearby shanty places, and to retrieve those Willing fellows were few and far between Many of you refer one teacher “AVK”, if not mistaken I think was A V Krishnamoorthy, who used to teach Higher level Mathematics very well but also do it at Galloping speed. I had no probs as i was fairly O K in my curricular and cocurricular. I left
the place inthe earliest 1950″s and hardly been there since. Am sure LOT WATER HAS FLOWN IN THE THAMBRAPARANI AND NOT OT MENTION in MANIMUTHAR(the Dam site was a retreatsite us) AND CANADIAN CANAL(nice to see the frames of the last mentioned)Since leaving the place I was more in theAir (Airliner)than on the beautiful mother earth as that of Kallidaikurichi.
Loving greetings to fellow Kallidai Folks

I am very eager to visit the temples there. I pray God to facilitate my wish.
My maternal grand father was doing Cloth business – late Ramalingasarma and his wife was Parvathavardhini Ammal. they had three sons and three daughters. My paternal grand father Viswanatha Iyer and Mangalanayaki Ammal was in Hotel business.

Kallidaikurichy a green village surrounded with paddy fields. I came from North Mada street near lakshmipathi Koil pattar house. I am now settled at Coimbatore. I remember my school days at Kallidai. Very calm place to settle at retired life. Even all streets are very narrow, there is no traffic jam., people love one another, cheap living, no tension life. What a great village life?. I like to visit Kallidai during Perumal Koil festival.
