Learning About Abdul Kalam

February 28, 2008 yagyaraman 1 comment

Honarary Doctrates from 30 Universities around the World. Awarded Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna in 1997.

Learning from his Speeches (on the Web)

Nothing is Impossible:

Human flight is nothing but creativity of human mind and it undergoes several struggles to achieve excellence. In 1895, a great well-known scientist Lord Kelvin, who was the President of Royal Society of London said, “any thing heavier than air cannot fly, and cannot be flown.” Within a decade, Wright Brothers proved man could fly of course at heavy risk and cost.

On the successful completion of Moon Mission in 1969, Von Braun, a very famous rocket designer, who built Saturn-V, to launch the capsule with astronauts and made moon walk a reality, in 1975 said “If I am authorized, I will remove the word impossible”.

According to the laws of aerodynamics the bumble bee should never be able to fly. Because of the size, weight, and shape of its body in relationship to the total wing span, flying is scientifically impossible. The bumble bee, being ignorant of scientific theory, goes ahead and flies anyway.

Song Of Youth
As a young citizen of India, armed with technology,
knowledge and love for my nation,
I realize, small aim is a crime.
I will work and sweat for a great vision,
the vision of transforming India into a developed nation,
powered by economic strength with value systemI am one of the citizens of the billion;
Only the vision will ignite the billion souls.
It has entered into me ; The ignited soul compared to any resource is the most
powerful resource on the earth, above the earth and under the earth.
I will keep the lamp of knowledge burning to achieve the vision – Developed India
If we work and sweat for the great vision with ignited minds,
the transformation leading to the birth of vibrant developed India will happen.
I pray the Almighty: “May the divine peace with beauty enter into our people;
Happiness and good health blossom in our bodies, minds and souls”.

COURAGE TO GIVE
“Courage to think different,
Courage to invent,
Courage to discover the impossible,
Courage to travel into an unexplored path,
Courage to share knowledge
Courage to remove pain
Courage to reach the unreached
Courage to combat problems
And Succeed,
Are the unique qualities of youth.”
As the youth of my nation,
I will work and work with courage to achieve success in all my missions

Lumbini Gardens – Boating in Bangalore

February 26, 2008 yagyaraman 1 comment

I never knew that there is a place for boating in Bangalore. Found a boating place in Outer Ring Road, when we were going to ISKCON. Located the place and enquired about the place and finally, last Sunday, Me and Madhu went for boating in Lumbini Gardens in Bangalore :-) . It was around 30 mins drive from house.

We both went in for a boat ride called “Coffee Boat” which could accomodate 20 people. Round around the lake was hardly 15 minutes, but was really good experience to see couple of Apartments also near the lake !!! At one place, a bus was coming in the road which was hardly few hundred metres from the lake :-)

Boats in Lumbini Garden           Lumbini Lake           We are only travelling in the boat :-)

There were lot of counters for Eatables :-) . Had some to taste :-) . Lots of small small rides for kids. Many small children were enjoying the place and the surrounding there. There was also an artificial wave pool (similar to what is there in Wonder La).

Spent close to 3 hours there. It was really a good experience. We both decided it is worth to visit the place again whenever we wanted :-) as it was not too far. Next time, we both would try the pedal boat :-)

Civilian Awards in India

February 22, 2008 yagyaraman 6 comments

I always wondered, how many Awards we have in our country and what is the difference between those, which is higher in hierarchy. Learnt about that in Wikipedia (This is one site, which I have started going through for anything and everything and I am never let down because it gives so much of details :-) )

Padma Shri
This award is given by the Government of India generally to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Social Service and public life. (Padma = Lotus, in Sanskrit). As of 2008 Feb, 2095 people have received the award.

Padma Bhushan
This is awarded to recognize distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field. It stands third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan, but comes before the Padma Sri. As of 2008 Feb, 1003 people have received the award.

Padma Vibhushan
The Padma Vibhushan is India’s second highest civilian honour. It consists of a medal and a citation and is awarded by the President of India.

It was established on January 2, 1954. It follows the Bharat Ratna and precedes the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded to recognize exceptional and distinguished service to the nation in any field, including government service.
As of Feb 2008, 235 people have received the award.

Bharat Ratna
Bharat Ratna (translates to Jewel of India or Gem of India in English) is India’s highest civilian award, awarded for the highest degrees of national service. This service includes artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as “recognition of public service of the highest order.” The award was established by the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad, on January 2, 1954. The honour has been awarded to forty persons, a list which includes two non-Indians and a naturalized Indian citizen. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are the states with the most number of awardees (8 each). The actual award is designed in the shape of a peepul leaf and carries the Hindi-written words “Bharat Ratna” on the front. The reverse side of the medal carries the state emblem and motto. The original statutes of January 1954 did not make allowance for posthumous awards (and this perhaps explains why the decoration was never awarded to Mahatma Gandhi), though this provision was added in the January 1955 statute. Subsequently, there have been ten posthumous awards, including the award to Subhash Chandra Bose in 1992, which was later withdrawn due to a legal technicality, the only case of an award being withdrawn.

While there was no formal provision that recipients of the Bharat Ratna should be Indian citizens, this seems to have been the general assumption. There has been one award to a naturalized Indian citizen — Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa (1980); and two to non-Indians — Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (1987) and Nelson Mandela (1990).

No one has been conferred with Bharat Ratna since 2001.

Facts about Rajnikanth

February 22, 2008 yagyaraman 2 comments

I got this in an email. Intresting……..

In Vadivel’s language “Ippadi yellam UKKANTHU YOSIPPANGALO” :-)

Rajanikanth makes onions cry

Rajanikanth can delete the Recycle Bin.

Ghosts are actually caused by Rajanikanth killing people faster than Death can process them.

When Rajanikanth enters a room, he doesn’t turn the lights on,……… …. he turns the dark off.

When Rajanikanth looks in a mirror the mirror shatters, because not even glass is stupid enough to get in between Rajanikanth and Rajanikanth.

Brett Favre can throw a football over 50 yards. Rajanikanth can throw Brett Favre even further.

The last digit of pi is Rajanikanth. He is the end of all things.

A Handicap parking sign does not signify that this spot is for handicapped people. It is actually in fact a warning, that the spot belongs to Rajanikanth and that you will be handicapped if you park there.

Rajanikanth’ calendar goes straight from March 31st to April 2nd, no one fools Rajanikanth.

Once a cobra bit Rajanikanth’ leg. After five days of excruciating pain, the cobra died.

When Rajanikanth gives you the finger, he’s telling you how many seconds you have left to live.

Rajanikanth can kill two stones with one bird.

Rajanikanth was once on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and was the first to spin. The next 29 minutes of the show consisted of everyone standing around awkwardly, waiting for the wheel to stop.

Leading hand sanitizers claim they can kill 99.9 percent of germs. Rajanikanth can kill 100 percent of whatever he wants.

There is no such thing as global warming. Rajanikanth was cold, so he turned the sun up.

Rajanikanth can set ants on fire with a magnifying glass. At night.

In an average living room there are 1,242 objects Rajanikanth could use to kill you, including the room itself.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman. Behind every dead man, there is Rajanikanth.

Rajanikanth got his drivers license at the age of 16 Seconds.

The square root of Rajanikanth is pain. Do not try to square Rajanikanth, the result is death.

When you say “no one’s perfect”, Rajanikanth takes this as a personal insult.

I am in WordPress now

February 20, 2008 yagyaraman 3 comments

I was updating the Settings of my Blog in Blogspot and Clicked on the Big button @ the bottom of the page. It gave a JavaScript alert for Confirmation. Being a Software Engineer, promptly I clicked on OK. Within Seconds the page was refreshed saying something like “Your Blog has been successfully deleted“!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh. Goddddddddddddddd.

Bhoooooooooooommmmmmmmm“. My 29 posts were deleted. I thought I was clicking on Save but without noticing had clicked on “DELETE”. I ignored the Confirmation because I ASSUMED it was confirmation for ”Save”.  It would have been great if an Email confirmation was also asked before Deleting the blog. But may be it would come in future versions…

Gone is Gone. So created a new account in this and wanted to check this as well. So Yagayraman will be blogging regularly in this now :-)

Moral of the Story: Always read the dialogue box that Brower throws up :-)
